Trial Lessons

The trial lesson is the first step towards gaining your Private Pilot Licence. It will give you an insight into what's involved in the PPL course and the time flown counts towards your licence. A trial lesson also makes an excellent gift for those looking to experience the thrill of flight.

*Our trial lessons are 30 or 60 minutes flight time with a 30 minute briefing.

30/60 Minute Trial Lessons

When you arrive at the flying school you will be met by your instructor who will give you a choice of which direction you'd most like to fly in. Usually during the 60 minute flights we fly either West towards Southport/Blackpool or East towards the Pennines. We do try to get you over your house but unfortunately due to Manchester Airports controlled airspace we cannot always guarantee this. After a small bit of paperwork you will be shown out to the aircraft by your instructor who will explain the basic flying controls. After the pre-flight checks have been completed it's time to fly!

Shortly after take off the instructor will hand over control to the “student” who will then fly the aircraft for most of the flight… if they want to! All our trial lessons take place in a single engine light aircraft operating at speeds of around 100mph. On returning to the airfield the “student” will receive a certificate with details of the flight. Afterwards you are free to relax in the clubhouse where refreshments are served.

***Please note height and weight restrictions apply to the 2 seat aircraft, these are 6'2" and 13 stone respectively. If you chose a 4 seat aircraft we can only carry one interested observer in the back. Ensure you have read the full terms and conditions before booking.

Half Day Trial Lesson

The half day trial lesson is ideal for those who want more experience than a 1 hour flight in the air. From Barton we will fly to Sleap Aerodrome in Shropshire where you can have a chat with your instructor and a light lunch in the Shropshire Aero Club cafe. Altogether it is around 2 hours flying time. Lunch is included in the following prices...

If you decide that flying is for you and that you'd like to train for the PPL, you will need to sign up for membership and have a chat with the instructor / flying school staff about booking your next lesson! Your trial lesson time will also count towards your PPL.
